All designated drivers for transport of hazardous substances on the roads in Singapore are required to hold a legitimate Hazardous Materials Transportation Driver Permit. The Driver’s Permit comes in the form of a smart card. Each permit includes individual biometrics (i.e. fingerprints) and important knowledge of the drivers. These are used together with the Driver’s Identity Verification system to confirm the identity of the driver at checkpoints or any roadside inspections operated by the relevant authorities.
